“My reason for painting the He'e (red octopus) was for one of my young student artists. She requested to learn how to paint an octopus, and as I taught her the process, I fell in love with the image. So I recreated it myself on larger canvas to display in my home. It is the first painting I've ever completed for myself. I love the texture and contrasting colors found on a he'e. I've always been fascinated by their intelligence and their shape. I chose to paint the background with texture rather than smooth, silky water because I wanted the feel of paint to contrast the liveliness of the he'e's flesh. This is one of my favorite paintings and I'm sure you and your guests will love it as well.”
